What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis (often referred to as trance) is a pleasurable, completely
natural, altered state of awareness that we all experience in our
everyday lives. Daydreaming; concentrating or being engrossed in
something to the extent that you are unaware of your surroundings or
what others are saying; arriving at a destination yet unaware of passing
notable landmarks. We are all familiar with these experiences yet how
many of us realise that each is a light form of trance?
Clinical hypnosis is a relaxing, pleasurable experience during which the
client is always aware of their surroundings and of what is being said.
The client is in control at all times and is able, should they choose,
to terminate the trance at any stage.
Hypnosis works with the unconscious mind where memories, beliefs,
emotions, learned behaviours and information are stored. Contrary to
the common misconception, it is impossible to hypnotise
someone into doing something that compromises their morals, beliefs or
values. (Stage subjects only ‘cluck like a chicken’, as this
behaviour appeals to their naturally extrovert
characters; those that do object to such behaviour are carefully
de-selected off stage to avoid ‘spoiling the show’.)
